Comments on the Military and Business Ownership

My first lessons in leadership started as a young Army Ranger. This photo was taken at our Ranger Regiment Ball, where I was surrounded by titans. Some of the senior leaders there were the very men who inspired the film “Black Hawk Down” after their service and sacrifice in the Battle of Mogadishu in Somalia. From them, I learned how a leader interacts with those around him. I learned how to effectively structure a team, a mission, then an organization. I learned what kind of mettle you need to effectively lead people through difficult situations. Observing them put a fine edge on the notion of leadership for me as a young man. By following their example, I learned how to focus, communicate, and build a team that upholds values of trust and discipline. My advice to young people looking to find their own leadership style - whether that’s in the military or corporate world - is to pay attention to those around you. Watch what they do. Let yourself be open to their teachings.
